If there is any true test of man on wheels it is the Dakar Rally. One of the most gruelling events that the world of motorsports has ever seen, the annual Dakar Rally was originally called the Paris Dakar Rally at the time of its inception which started from Paris, France to Dakar, Senegal from 1978 till 2007. In 2008, the Paris Dakar Rally had to be cancelled due to security threats in Mauritania, which presented a change of course for the annual event. So in 2009, the rally started taking place in South America instead till date, where riders and drivers travel through more than 10,000 kms of unforgiving terrain that takes them over mountains, deserts, snow and coasts of Argentina and Chile.

The 2016 edition of the Dakar Rally will be on its way starting on January 3, 2016, and will take the contestants on a gruelling 13-day journey across Buenos Aires, Salta and Rosario and back, we bring you one of the best documentaries that was created by BBC of the original 1977 Paris Dakar Rally.

This video takes us on a trip down memory lane to the very first Dakar that started on December 26, 1978 and finished at Dakar on January 14, 1979. The first rally saw Cyril Neveu picking up the victory on his Yamaha in the motorcycles category while Alain Genestier took home the trophy in a Range Rover for the cars category. The first rally saw a total participation of 182 at the start while only 74 successfully completed the challenge.
