Like many of us growing up, the classic BMW 2002 was the machine dreams were made of for Omar Malaeb. Throughout Omar’s childhood, he shared a special relation with a particular 1973 BMW 2002, which later turned into a very real love affair. The classic BMW sitting pretty in Sahara Beige caught Omar’s attention everyday on his way to school. It was the car’s simplistic design that was such a far cry from anything ordinary that fueled his initial infatuation into a desire to one day have a 2002 in his garage. Some years later, that dream was realised by no other car, but that very 1973 BMW 2002 in Sahara Beige that he used to cross every morning. Destiny works in mysterious ways.
After his schooling, Omar moved to the United States for 7-years where he completed his studies and started working. After almost a decade abroad, he decided to return back to Lebanon. On arrival, the first thing Omar did was to drive down to the same house which he used to pass by as a child to admiring the beautiful Sahara Beige 1973 BMW 2002. To his surprise, the car was still there; in a much more distraught condition than his childhood memories had captured it last. After a few conversations with the owner, Omar took the keys of the very car that got his fascination for cars going during his childhood. The deteriorated condition of the 1973 BMW 2002 was still far away from being perfect though. Omar spent the next three years restoring the car to its former condition. It wasn’t an easy job though, as original parts were difficult to come by in his region. Omar restored the bodywork, mechanicals and the entire engine and transmission to its original state. Finally, patience and resilience paid off after the years when a fully-restored Sahara 1973 BMW 2002 was one again ready to roll out of the garage in exact same condition his childhood memories remembered it.
The 1973 BMW 2002 is now Omar’s Daily driver now. He drives it everywhere; to camping trips and long drives. The car’s simplicity still amazes him and its handling still surprises him. The 2002 has become his tool for meditation; an ultimate stress-buster that takes him away from the pressures of work life. And even today, Omar Malaeb looks at the Sahara 2002 with the same passion as he used to when he was a boy passing it by everyday on his way to school.
