While Aston Martins from the 1980’s were as competent as anything else coming out of England at the time, they seem to have fallen into relative obscurity when seen alongside their counterparts from the 50s and 60s. The Aston Martin V8 Vantage in V580 ‘Oscar India’ specification though was as unique as anything to have come from the Gaydon based manufacturer before this.
Only 41 LHD cars were made to this spec. Changes specific to the ‘Oscar India’ cars were a 15 hp bump up in power for the 5.3 litre V8 to 390 hp. This made the car good for 146 mph (235 kmph) and a 0 to 60 mph (96 kmph) time of 6.6s. A more noticeable change was the adoption of 8-in. BBS wheels and the flared wheelarches to accomodate these. This was done to correct the compromised ride and handling characteristics of the earlier Pirelli tyres.
This particular Aston Martin V8 Vantage V580 ‘Oscar India’ is the more desirable 5 speed manual in Vantage trim. Up for auction at RM Sotheby’s Paris 2018 event, this car has undergone extensive restoration over the last 10 years to bring it up to showroom condition. More than EUR 188,000 has been spent on the mechanicals, body and interiors to get in pristine order.
