On 13 July 2018 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Bonhams, is presenting a stunning set of historic automobilia which features three of the most important helmets of Formula One drivers: Ayrton Senna, Mike Hawthorn and Juan Manuel Fangio. The sale will feature Senna’s Bell Helmet worn during testing at the Paul Ricard Circuit on 2nd March 1994 which was just a few months prior to his death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. The three-time Formula One World Champion’s helmet is painted in Brazilian national colours to showcase his patriotism and is certified as the only one of its kind helmet to exist. Then there is Herbert Johnson’s racing helmet, formerly the property of 1958 World Driver’s Champion Mike Hawthorn. The helmet of ‘Le Papillion’ was previously displayed at the Donington Grand Prix Collection until 2005.
Lastly, there is five-time World Driver’s Champion winner, Juan Manuel Fangio’s 1952 lightweight racing helmet that is testament to the man’s domination at the first decade of Formula One. This helmet of Fangio is believed to have been used during the 1952 international race season held in South America and then Europe.
