The classics never die and the old never fades out! There is a charm to the classic cars from the eras gone by that is unmatched by the current crop of techno-wizardry laden cars. However, now and then, car manufacturers look back into their own histories and revive an old legend, either in a limited run, a new model or a concept that pays an ode to an old hero. This is where BMW comes in with its Hommage line-up, which started in 1997 and since then has had eight models added to his special series, and that includes two motorcycles as well. The latest entrant to this line up is the just revealed, BMW 2002 Hommage which is the company’s ode to the legendary BMW 2002, and is making it début this weekend at the Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este along with the previous seven models from Hommage line up that are coming together to celebrate the company’s centenary year.
The car you see in the pictures is a modern-day interpretation of the original BMW 2002 by the designers at BMW; however BMW is yet to reveal what powers this all new addition to the Hommage club. But what we know is in fact the BMW M2’s awesome 3.0 litre straight-six turbo-charged engine powers this BMW 2002 Hommage, interestingly this engine on the BMW 2002 Hommage also uses a bit from the M3’s power-plant such as the pistons and the bearings meaning that this tiny little car gets a power output of around 370bhp while the peak torque rating should also hover around the same figure mark.
On the design front, the BMW 2002 Hommage takes a leaf from the way the classic BMW livery looked that consists of the front splitter painted in the M tri-colour pattern with a neatly added “obrut” on the inside of the splitter reminiscent of the original’s reversed turbo sticker. Moving further on to the exterior of the BMW 2002 Hommage, a carbon-fiber band runs through the cars waistline that is a shout out of sorts to the original cars chrome trim. However, the cabin seems way less boxy than the originals green house, this time around BMW sticking close to the interiors of the M2. The most striking bit of the design are the flared-fenders that pay a definite ode to the homologation BMW 2002 Turbo of the old and same goes to the off-center roundel at the tail too. The wheels of this BMW 2002 Hommage ought to be among the cars more striking design elements while the ducktail spoiler is simply a neat touch to the overall design.
BMW, in order to celebrate the golden jubilee of the original 1966 BMW 2002 has given the headlights of the BMW 2002 Hommage a gold hue. We particularly liked the separate turn indicators surrounded by a carbon trim while being embedded just above the headlights. The overall design and feel of this BMW 2002 Hommage may or may not be up to the taste of many people around but for sure it has a striking presence and in that way it does its duty for BMW as a design study helping the company set a path for future designs.
