What appeared to be slight advantage for Toyota on Day 1, Free Practice at the 2017 FIA WEC 6 Hours of Silverstone quickly turned into absolute domination on Day 2, Qualifying Day for the Japanese Manufacturer. The Toyota Gazoo Racing team LMP prototypes secured first and second place on the grid for the 6-hour race on Sunday. The Porsche 919 Hybrids had to settle for third and fourth for the season opener.

One of the major reasons for Toyota’s absolute domination was the implementation of the higher downforce aero package which the manufacturer was using on their TS050 HYBRID. As the downforce package is only allowed to be used in any two races of the season, Porsche chose to keep it for the upcoming 24hours of Le Mans and perhaps SPA. While it might prove as in viable long term strategy, it meant that the Porsche 919 Hybrid LMP1 prototypes were no where near the times that were being posted by the Toyota LMP1 prototypes.

The LMP2 cars which have seen major mechanical upgrades for the 2017 season posted impressive times during day 2 qualifying, with Alex Lynn and Pierre Thiriet taking pole position onboard the G-Drive Racing ORECA-Gibson prototype cars.

The Ford GTLM driven by Harry Tincknell and Andy Priaulx took pole at the qualifying for the 6 Hours of Silverstone ahead of the Ferrari onslaught in the LMGTE Pro class.
