Since the announcement of the partnership between BMW Motorrad of Germany and TVS Motors of India in April 2013, this is the first time that an actual prototype has been caught in the open world.
The machine in the spyshots is BMW’s answer to its rather empty sub-500 cc segment and is aimed for developing markets like India and South East Asian countries. While for India’s TVS Motors, this would be a machine that would open a new world of opportunities as the company has struggled in the past to break past the 200 cc segment.
The machine is estimated to carry a 300 cc engine, while currently it is unclear if it would be a single cylinder or a twin cylinder unit. The test mule’s design looks quite similar to the TVS Draken concept motorcycle that was on display at the 2014 Auto Expo in Delhi (Asia’s largest automotive show). While the single projector headlight looks like an unfinished design, the motorcycle features a large, wide tank cover with extended shrouds on either side. The motorcycle also has upside down forks at the front while boasting a large single disc upfront as well as a single disc at the rear. The exhaust sticks out from the right side and the wheels have a five spoke alloy design.
Codenamed “K03” there has been recent news of parts being imported for the same motorcycle over to India too (recently reported by out sister website Indian Autos Blog), as the motorcycle continues testing.
The TVS-BMW motorcycle is expected to launch by the end of 2015, and will be taking on competition from the highly successful KTM Duke 390 and Kawasaki’s Z300.
