Smoky, retro, sideways fun. These are the three terms often used together when describing the Mk2 Ford Escort. Possibly one of the most successful rally car of all time the Mk2 Ford Escort has clinched so many titles that there would be pages filled with its rallying success. On top of the range were the RS1800’s, which when specially prepared for rallies carried unrealistically light strengthened bodies, simple mechanicals that were couple with a fantastic steering and gearbox. These flat-fronted rally monsters were one of the most iconic faces in rallying during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Almost every famous rally driver, from Ari Vatanen toHannu Mikkola drove the fire breathing little hatchback to victory at countless occasions during the late 70s and early 80s.

Three decades forward to today and the legacy of the Mk2 Ford Escort still remains absolutely intact as it used to back in its hay day. So much so that rally drivers like Frank Kelly still swear by its performance. His machine of choice, of course a Mk2 Ford Escort features a 2.5-litre Series 2 Millington engine while honing a Tractive 5-speed gearbox. Under the bodywork is a Atlas Casing Elite limited slip differential that does all the beautiful work of making the Mk2 dance on its feet as you would seen in the video below.

The video titled “Fast, Sideways and Mental” is all you need to see to understand the capability of the Mk2 Ford Escort chassis. As Frank Kelly goes from corner to corner making the car dance slideways on its toe tips.
