This is the same Porsche 356 C which was owned by Janis Joplin, who originally sung “Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes”. A car that was a piece of her heart which stood by her along the journey is going to be auctioned at RM Sotheby’s, New York City. Janis was a well known for her performing ability and was a multi-instrumentalist. While her fans referred to her stage presence as “electric”, she was known as “The Queen of Psychedelic Soul” and “Pearl” among her friends. She was also a painter, dancer and music arranger. Hence, she had to drive a car that could represent her rebellious tastes and liking.
It was a white Porsche 356SC when it was originally bought by Janis in 1968; 2 years before she died. The Porsche 356SC which was not even driven far away from the local hills when some ogre filched it and to make it worse, painted it grey which was earlier clad with her vision of vibrant colors, sun sign, the car was exemplified with butterflies, jellyfish, etc. It was later on driven by manager till it was put on display in Rock and Roll Hall of fame since 1995.
And now, finally the car might not only get fresh air to breath outside the hall of fame but can be all yours after the Joplin family has decided to auction the same at the Sotheby’s, New York on an occasion called ‘Driven by Disruption’, ironic isn’t it?
