Mercedes Generation EQ Concept unveiled at 2016 Paris Motor Show
The ongoing 2016 Paris Motor Show has given us a glimpse at the future. Mercedes has just unveiled the long awaited all-electric car from its stable. This all-electric SUV coupe study called Generation EQ concept. Mercedes during the unveiling has also declared that this previews new Mercedes family of cars under the new EQ brand. This clean and classy looking Mercedes Generation EQ is powered by a pair of electric motors. These two motors combined make power figures of 402bhp and 700Nm torque. Furthermore, Mercedes has utilised scalable battery architecture on the Mercedes Generation EQ concept. The car also gets permanent AWD. On the range front, Mercedes is claiming a range of 500km on a single charge for this Generation EQ concept. The battery pack that contains lithium-ion battery build by Daimler itself is mounted between the axles.
Mercedes says, the batteries are built in a model-specific total capacity of over 70kWh. This would mean that the Mercedes Generation EQ concept will be able to do 0-62mph in 5 seconds. Mercedes said regarding the choice of the SUV design for their first all-electric EQ model as it being popular these days. Design-wise, the Generation EQ looks dynamic with really clean lines and we like it. For the design of the Mercedes Generation EQ concept, the company took a rethink of the design philosophy. The end result, as per Mercedes is a car with an avant-garde, contemporary and distinctive electro-look. The Black Panel front grille will be the distinguishing factor for all future ‘Generation EQ’ electric models from Mercedes. We liked the way how Mercedes has integrated the white-illuminated Mercedes star emblem in the grill as well.
The Mercedes Generation EQ concept also integrates all the light elements under one surface. Towards the interior, there are four individual seats with integrated speakers in the headrests for a better sound experience. We particularly liked the classy rose gold trim on the center console and on the door handles. There is a fairly wide modular display behind the steering wheels as well while another set of displays is integrated into the front backrests. Mercedes has revealed that it is currently developing a new modular architecture which will be exclusive to electric vehicles of their new EQ sub-brand. Mercedes showed its seriousness for the Mercedes Generation EQ concept by saying it will go into production in 2019. This would mean that the all-electric SUV coupe will launch the new Mercedes sub-brand as well. When launched the production Mercedes Generation EQ concept will rival Tesla Model X and Audi’s E-Tron Quattro.
The Mercedes Generation EQ concept can be wirelessly, traditionally and by fast charging as well. Mercedes is expecting, by 2019 charging times will be significantly reduced with the European Combined Charging System standard (CCS) introduction. Mercedes also wants to bring a charging capacity of 300kW in the medium to long term. The German car maker also said that five minutes of charge will give their vehicle sufficient power for 100km (62 miles) of driving range. The production variant of the EQ concept will be in the same price range of a reasonably equipped Mercedes GLC. Mercedes also announced that Daimler will have more than 10 fully electric models on the market by 2015.
