Olympics and Formula one are far far apart from each other, but that doesn’t mean that there cannot be some Formula 1 thrill added to the ongoing Olympics at Rio. And there is a small matter of Brazil being the home land of the legendary Formula 1 icon, Ayrton Senna. Sadly he is no longer with us, but his is a legacy that will remain forever, not just in F1 but in the whole sporting world as well. To motivate its own team, the host country Brazil created a campaign by the name, ‘In the Heart of Brazil’. And in one of the campaign videos, Brazil is using Ayrton’s retelling of his incredible drive from the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix, through a cool Ayrton Senna animation.

This outstanding animation comes from the talent pool at the Instituto Ayrton Senna, JWT. In this gorgeous piece of art, Senna retells the end of the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix in his own words. Looking back into 1991 race, it was Ayrton Senna first victory at home, but it did not come easy. After having qualified on Pole, Senna was poised for a victory, however a failing gearbox meant Senna would have to fight real hard with his car to get it through the finish line before anyone else. Senna had lost his fourth gear. However, his closest competitor, Mansell’s gearbox gave up first, causing him to retire on lap 61. The ordeal became more intense for Senna when he lost his fifth and third gear also. This meant he had to maintain sixth gear in slow and medium corners, almost stalling on many occasions.

Behind Senna’s issues, Patrese was catching up rapidly, but his own gearbox problems meant he could not pass. Adding to that, the rain had started to fall intensely; this led to Senna gesturing to stewards to stop the race. Eventually, Senna won by a whisker of a margin of 2.9 seconds. Needles to say, Ayrton Senna was ecstatic to win at his home track.  However, that extreme struggle to keep the car under control, caused Senna muscle cramps and fever. As the car came to a stop, being exhausted completely, Senna could not even move on his own. He had to be lifted out of the car due to exhaustion and driven to the podium in the medical car.
