Monterey Jet Center – 16th August 2017
A perfect finish to my first day of Monterey Car Week 2017 with a VIP event hosted by Gordon McCall celebrating its 26th anniversary year. The event attracts around 3,000 enthusiastic, auto-moto-aero aficionados to the Monterey Airport. The California Highway Patrol 11-99 Foundation is the beneficiary of the overwhelming generosity of the guests. Definitely not a bribe though, officer.
Some incredible machinery was on display here; a Douglas DC3 providing a temporary garage to a couple of McLarens greeted the attendees by the entrance. My favourite plane, the P51D Mustang was parked alongside other incredible vehicles like an original Cobra, a super rare Alfa Romeo Disco Volante concept by Touring and a BMW M1.
The eclectic ensemble included a Dukes of Hazard star car, the Lucid Pikes Peak car, an Ariel Nomad and Atom. The flowing boutique wines and beautiful bites all helped the evening along, well, at least mine. It was a pleasure to also spot a couple Shelby Daytona Coupes and a handful of Ferraris. A stunning Ferrari 250 Tour de France took the apparent center stage with a 330 nearby to echo its support. A convertible Maserati Ghibli also attracted some well-deserved attention. An obligatory gaggle of modern supercars also featured, two brand new Ford GT’s, a few Lamborghinis and a Porsche GT3 RS. A Mirage M2 in Gulf Racing livery was beyond stunning, which was easily my favourite car at the McCall Motorsport Revival. Check my Motorsports Reunion article on ColumnM for more images of that.
The Petersen Museum brought along three Lowriders, a car culture that deserves a lot more appreciation than it does. Having attended many Lowrider shows in and around Los Angeles, was quite a novelty to see a Chevy Impala hop for this upmarket crowd, certainly not the usual audience the owner is accustomed to.
