Fiat Abarth 124 Rally Car Is Brilliant In Action
Its old news (yet exciting) now that the Italian company is planning to take the Fiat Abarth 124 Rallying next year and would call the contender the Abarth R-GT. This newly-developed machine based on the new Mazda Miata would get 300bhp (140 more than the stock production Fiat 124) from its over-bored 1.8-litre engine. Being the lightweight, rear-wheel driven car with beautifully handling chassis that the Fiat Abarth 124 is, its updated R-GT cousin would only make good things better.
While on the surface, the new R-GT looks pretty similar to the production-spec Fiat Abarth 124, it actually features an host of updates to make it more rally-compliant. The race-spec machine is now a hard-top, off course, with a substantially heavy roll cage that sits under the new black top. Instead of the six-speed manual transmission, the Fiat Abarth 124 rally car gets a seven-speed sequential shifter along with an anti-lag system to keep the turbo spooling at all times.

The Fiat Abarth 124 rally car should be contending in the 2017 World Rally Championship. While its a great looking, and sounding machine… I am not really sure how the rear-wheel driven car would do when contending against all-wheel drive true rally monsters from VW and Hyundai. In anyways, the Miata-turned-Fiat would at least be fun to watch, and by the sounds of what i hear in the video, a joy to listen too.
This video below posted by Luca Rally on YouTube seems to be from one of the Abarth R-GT’s recent test runs somewhere presumably in the deep Italian countryside. Apart from the fact that the pace looks surprisingly quick, its the way that she handles that is an absolute delight to watch. And to add to the drama, the Fiat Abarth 124 rally car sounds absolutely fantastic though out the rev range.
