At a time when motorcycles were raw, powerful and completely devoid of any technical riding aids, racing them was considered as mad as climbing a mountain without any safety ropes. At such a time, there as none more famous and iconic as Barry Sheene, one of the greatest grand prix riders the world had ever seen. Sheene was a man with a character of his own, outspoken, bold and a complete party freak, who enjoyed life everyday as it came by.

After starting his racing career in 1968 onboard his father’s 125cc and 250 cc Bultaco motorcycles, Sheene went on to race and win in the World Championship Grand Prix motorcycle racing in 1973 in the Formula 750, and further winning the World Championship in 1976 and 1977 aboard the 500cc Suzuki Grand Prix motorcycle.

Barry Sheene was popular on and off the race track. While a dominant force in racing, his lifestyle was full of friends, parties and socialising. As they say, birds of the same feather flock together, Sheene’s friends were James Hunt, Ringo Starr and George Harrison, with whom he indulged in a flamboyant lifestyle of heavy smoking and drinking.

Sheene came from an era where motorcycle racers, or racers in general were charecterised true to who they were. Unlike the men in racing today, who’s true personalities are hidden behind layers of PR, Sheene’s character was out for the whole world to see and experience, giving him a style that was unapologetically his very own.

It is this lifestyle and his strong headedness in racing that inspired IO Films Australia and Deep Spring Pictures UK to create a film on the man’s epic life. The film inspires and is based on the book Barry: The Story of Motorcycle Legend Barry Sheene written by MotoGP journalists Steve Parrish and Nick Harris. The bio-pic on the life of the British motorcycle legend is to hit the sliver screen. While currently, there has been no released dates announced, there is a trailer that is currently up on YouTube to give us a teaser on what the movie would be like. From what it looks like, it is certainly going to be worth a watch. Hit the link below to watch the trailer of the movie Sheene.
