If you ever think of going racing to compete in some of the world’s biggest sports car racing series, then you certainly want to be with the best racing racing car makers in the business. That’s exactly who Prodrive are, the race car builders behind this competition spec 2002 Ferrari 550 Maranello. This very car currently listed on Girardo & Co. participated in the 24 hours of Le Mans 5 times, once being driven by rally legend Colin McRae himself.
The Ferrari 500 Maranello Prodrive with chassis no. ZFFZR49B000113136 was built in partnership with Care Racing to complete in FIA GT and ALMS GT1 championships. It was fitted with a enlarged version of the naturally-aspirated 5.5-litre V12 which now bore a displacement of 6.0-litre and produced upwards of 600 horsepower at its full state of tune. In the five years of its competition career, the Ferrari competed in every Le Mans 24 hours race while being a part of other racing championships, such as the American Le Mans Series Championship (ALMS) and the Le Mans Endurance series. While its Le Mans best would be an impressive 3rd in class, the Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrive got its glory in ALMS, where in 2003 it claimed three podium finishes that resulted in second overall in the entire year’s championship. Throughout its racing lifespan of 33 events, the Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrive picked up 14 podium finishes, 10 pole positions while taking the win in 5 races.
During the 2004 season, Colin McRae, who was looking to complete his lifetime ambitions of competing in marathon style racing events. He took up Le Mans next after finishing at the Dakar Rally earlier the same year, where he had secured two stage wins. For Le Mans, he came together with Prodrive and drivers Darren Turner and Rickard Rydell to compete in the 24 hour event. The three piloted this very 2002 Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrive through a total of 329 laps (about 4500kms) around the Le Sarthe circuit for the 24 hours of the event, finishing third in their GTS category.
