Well, you can think back as much as you want, but you can’t possibly recall the last discussion you had with your mates down at the local pub about racing or cars and not have the 911 come up as a potential contender, well I dare you to come up with one such instance. So it’s no surprise that the 911 is synonymous with sports car having in majority of the world except well for the United States (for obvious reasons). Porsche is one of those unique companies that takes pride in announcing itself as a sports car maker contrary to the likes of its logical competitors from Maranello and Woking (Ferrari and McLaren), who pride themselves in being makers of supercars.
The difference between the two ideologies is minute for every other person who thinks Gallo 24 is what you would call a ‘Racing Engine’, but for driving enthusiasts like you and me it is the same difference that exists between the sun and the earth. So the Porsche 911 has left every driving enthusiast around the world baptised in its brilliant driving dynamics so much so that words like water-cooled, 2.7-litre, RSR and Martini Racing can result in the same reaction as having oneself drenched in Megan Fox’s Pheromones! Such is the charm and panache that has captivated the enthusiasts world over. The carefree flamboyance and pure skill exhibited by the test driver of RUF (Stefan Roser), a company which modified Porsches and builds on their performance and driving dynamics.
Driving the RUF BTR Yellowbird around the treacherous Green-Hell a.k.a Nordschleife of Nurburgring in what can only be described as God-like skills and bravery only worthy of comparison with the great Hercules. As a huge trail of white smoke keeps pouring out of the rear tyres, it permanently cements a place in the minds of driving enthusiasts as a machine which demand the best of driving skills. So the aspect of spotting the rarest and the most iconic of these classic Porsche sports cars in impeccably pristine condition can be nothing short of a myth.
So when you drive across the countryside and reach a random wooden fence and a lonesome letterbox, little does this leave you feeling that you have arrived at a classicPorschee heaven. Lee Maxted-Page by appearance looks like any ordinary bloke, with his inconspicuous looks only preceded by the inconspicuousness of his business. Having purchased a small farm 15-years ago in the middle of nowhere, he has transformed it into a lusting dream for all classic Porsche lovers by filling it with rarest of Porsches you could only dream of laying your eyes on. The whole concept of ‘Barn Find” has been given a new definition, with the smell of motor oil and gasoline that transports one through time, making you relive in the glories of the past.
Lee Maxted-Page is no stranger to these cars, as he fondly narrates the tale of how he has been driving 911’s ever since he was 20-years-old and tells how addictive driving an air-cooled Porsche is, and how he hasn’t been able to go back to anything else ever since. The center of attraction on the floor is an obnoxiously delicious Orange 911 2.8 RSR as it stands there under the gleaming lights of the shop floor. By now it comes as no surprise to lean that most of the restoration of the classic Porsches here is done in-house by Lee Maxted-Page, with the engine and transmission workshops looking as striking organised as a surgery room.
It therefore becomes quite evident why Lee Maxted-Page’s Shop in the middle of countryside is nothing short of a mirage and is sought after by every serious classic Porsche collector. The passion and heritage for these timeless beauties is evident in every breath of air and the man himself, Mr Lee Maxted-Page is nothing short of a genius struck by true love the first time he laid his eyes on a Porsche.
